Classical Archaeology

Perge towerClassical Archaeology is intended for you if you have an interest in the culture of the antique Mediterranean world. The field of studies include the art and cultural history of the Greek-Roman world from the prehistoric periods (the Bronze Age and the Iron Age) up untill the historic periods from approximately 700 years B.C. till approximately 400 years A.C.

Archaeological research is based on material remnants which means all man-made material, ranging from small potsherds to the impressive architecture of Acropolis and unique artefacts which today is displayed in museums.

The material remnants are invaluable source material for a fundamental cultural analysis of the societies and the people of the Classical Antiquity, from the slave to the ruler. Such an analysis furthermore contributes to a more profound understanding of the modern world and the traces of the Classical Antiquity expressed in our own culture.

The study focuses on the Greek and Roman cultures and their immense prevalence. The great influence of the cultural meeting with the surrounding countries from the Orient to northern Europe is also explored.

Classical Archaeology is a very visual study and among other aspects you work with stilistic and picture analysis. These types of analysis are crucial when the archaeological material is to be classified and dated. Therefore it is of great importance for the students to gain knowledge about the most essential monuments, be it archaeological localities or museum collections.

For the same reason the study prepares the ground for considerable travelling and study trips will be arranged regularly to destinations within and outside of Denmark. Here the students get a chance to become acquainted with the material of Classical Archaeology. In addition the students will have many opportunities to participate in archaeological excavations in countries that have been influenced by the Greek-Roman cultures.

The study of Classical Archaeology has a close connection to Antikmuseet at Aarhus University and is situated in the new facilities on top of the museum. The artefacts from the museum is used during lectures and hence provide the possibility to get hands on original remnants.
