Introduction to the degree programmes

The field of Medieval and Renaissance Archaeology is intended for you who are interested in the culture of the Viking Age, Medieval times and the Renaissance in Denmark and Europe. The subject extends in time over almost 900 years, from the Viking Age beginning around the year 800 to Absolutism imports in 1660. Throughout this period, Europe is increasingly interconnected and linked. There was tremendous social, cultural and technological developments. Denmark changed from a pagan to a Christian country. Also the country's physical appearance was crucially changed.

The archaeological research is conducted through the study and interpretation of ancient material remains, including the cultural landscape. Archaeology is therefore both a very practical and very theoretical subject, where you are given the background to understand and discuss many issues in the present through the study of the past, such as religious change, etc.

The study is based on the tracks above and below ground, in water and in museum collections and archives - eg. churches, castles, houses, villages, technology, ships, weapons, costumes, etc. Some of these relics are still in use and helps to shape our environment today, while others are known only from archaeological excavations. Study tours at home and abroad will be made whenever possible because many relics are best studied on the spot.

At the section of Medieval and Renaissance Archeology you can achieve the following degrees:
