Teaching and Examination

Please note that

  • applicants to the Summer University are expected to have a good command of the English language
  • in order to attend you must hold a bachelor's degree (or a minimum of 180 ECTS in your study programme) in archaeology, religion studies, history, Scandinavian studies/Norse literature or related disciplines.

Teaching: Sessions and field trips

Instructions will include lectures by leading Viking scholars as well as group work, exercises and discussions. In addition, we offer a range of practical exercises and ’hands-on’ demonstrations of original artifacts. Excursions and museum visits will take participants to some of the most famous sites and monuments of the Viking Age (detailed course program and reading list will be announced later).

Attendance at lectures and on excursions is compulsory, and students are expected to participate actively in discussions. A reading list will be distributed to all participants before the course. The texts on this list will be included in class discussion and will form the basis of examinations.

Exam and credits

Grading is based on the academic regulations under the auspices of the Board of Studies for the Department of Anthropology, Archaeology and Linguistics. Upon request, and with the permission of both examiners, the exam paper may be written in one of the Scandinavian languages; otherwise papers must be in English.

Full participation in the course and a written examation will attract 10 ECTS.
